Short exchanges abroad

Metropolia grant for short-term mobility for study periods under 2 months is available twice during degree studies. The grant amount is 350 € (150 € to Estonia / student).

The Metropolia short exchange grant must be applied for before the study trip. The grant application approved by your degree programme must also be uploaded to the Mobility Online system prior to departure. Applications submitted after the trip will not be processed.

Conditions for the Metropolia grant (is currently being updated):

• The applicant is a Metropolia degree student
• The study trip takes place during the normative time of the studies, see below:
  • Bachelor’s degrees (AMK)
    • For a 210-credit degree, 3.5 years
    • For a 240-credit degree, 4 years
    • For a 270-credit degree, 4.5 years
  • Master’s degrees (YAMK)
    • For a 60-credit degree, the target duration is 1 year
    • For a 90-credit degree, the target duration is 1.5 years
• The degree programme accepts the study trip as part of your Metropolia degree: You get credits for the trip or the trip is part of a study module at Metropolia.
• The grant can also be awarded for collecting material abroad for a thesis when the international material is an essential part of carrying out the research, and the connection to the thesis objectives are appropriately justified. 
• The grant must be applied before the study trip (the grant application approved by your degree programme must also be uploaded to Mobility online prior to departure).
• The programme lasts for at least 2 days, but less than 60 days. The programme and duration of the trip must be verifiable if needed.
• You can apply for the short-term student mobility grant max. twice during your studies at Metropolia
• A student may receive only one grant at a time for a study trip, e.g. Metropolia grant, Erasmus, Nordplus, TFK etc.
• The Metropolia grant is a travel grant that requires travel to exchange destination. The destination country must be other than your country of residence or Finland. 
• If the study trip is cancelled or interrupted, the student must pay back the grant, either fully or partly. In special cases, such as if the student becomes ill, a medical certificate is requested. Based on this certificate, Metropolia will decide, case by case, how much of the grant must be paid back.

1. Fill in the Electronic Grant Application Form for Short-term Mobility.

• Fill in all the fields on the grant application.
• Use only your metropolia.fi e-mail address as contact information.
• Please note that when you select a field of study or country of destination, the page reloads.
• NB! The data you fill in will not be saved until after you click "Send". After sending the form you cannot edit your application.

2. After you have sent the grant application form, you will automatically receive an e-mail titled "Ohje Metropolian lyhyen vaihdon apurahan hakijalle / Instructions for Metropolia short-term grant applicant".  Please keep the e-mail for future reference.

3. Print the application form attached to the e-mail, and ask the person in the Degree Programme to sign it. Depending on the trip, the person who signs the application can be eg. the tour leader, Head of Degree Programme or a Study Advisor.

4. Upload the signed form to Mobility-Online system. You can find a link to the system from the e-mail mentioned in step 2.

5. You will receive a confirmation e-mail once your application has been processed.

NB! Due to the large number of grant applications at Metropolia, the grants are processed once a month. Signed grant applications received 10th of each month (exceptions July no processing and December by 8th) will be paid by the end of the month. The grant is processed 3 months before the start of the travel at the earliest.

The most popular season for short-term exchanges organised by Metropolia partner universities is during summer and winter. You can also search the opportunities independently and if you have questions, feel free to contact your degree programme International Relations Adviser. 

You can receive most of the information about upcoming short-term opportunities by following the communication and announcements through OMA workspaces. Often times there are only limited seats per short-exchange and therefore, internal application rounds are organised throughout the year. If needed, you can inquire about these possibilities from your international relations Adviser.

Upcoming short-term exchange  

Austria - Expanded Summer School 
University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria

• When: 8 –13.9 2026
• Application Deadline: 10.7 2026
• Target group: BA and MA students with an interest in games, particularly in game development
• Program in English (3 ECTS) “Play to Research” commences with a full-day workshop in Hagenberg, before transitioning to Linz for the Expanded Conference and Ars Electronica Festival activities. This structure is designed to provide both focused skill development and broad exposure to the cutting edge of digital and interactive art. Broaden knowledge in game development and games research
• Costs: No course/application fees. Students are responsible for travel, accommodation, meals, and personal expenses

Metropolia is a member in several Nordplus networks that offer intensive courses and exchange opportunities in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

The short term exchange grants will be announced separately and the durations vary. For example, Express exchanges are 5 days and you could receive the weekly grant of 250 euros and travel grant of 330 € (660 € - Iceland and Faroe Island & 1300 € Greenland).
