Right to study

Every student who has been accepted as a student, either for a degree or for other education, has the right to study. The student must register as an attending student in the manner prescribed by the UAS.

A degree student must enroll for attendance/non-attendance each academic year. Read more about enrolment for the academic year.

Length of study right

The duration of studies and number of academic years required depend on the degree programme or specialisation studies/professional major. 60 credits is equivalent to one academic year. For example, degree programmes that require 240 credits have a duration of 4 academic years. The number of academic years is counted by the student's attendance or non-attendance status, regardless of whether the studies progress.

The normative duration of academic years is affected and can vary depending on whether the student has studied before. The previous studies and courses can be credited as part of the new degree programme. Then the normative study time is determined by the amount of credits that are left after the previously completed credits are subtracted.

A full-time student has to plan his/her studies in such as way that they can be completed within the given study time. However, the student has the right to complete his/her studies within the normative given study time + 1 extra academic year, after which the student loses his/her right to study.

Discontinuation of the right to study

A student can lose the right to study for the following reasons:

  • failing to register as attending or non-attending by the deadline
  • failing to finish his or her studies within the period prescribed by law and any discretionary extension period granted
  • resigning at his or her own request
  • failing to pay the tuition fee for the academic year by the deadline given by the university of applied sciences, if he or she is obliged to pay such a fee, and not registering as non-attending.

Re-granting the right to study

Resigning from Metropolia

A student may notify Metropolia of their resignation, thereby losing the right to study. The notification of resignation must be completed in accordance with Metropolia’s instructions. The student will be automatically recorded in the student administration system as resigned beginning from the date on which the notification was submitted. The student is obliged to make sure that the studies they have completed have been recorded in the student administration system before submitting a notification of resignation. A resigning student is personally responsible for cancelling any benefits related to their studies and returning any property belonging to Metropolia immediately after submitting the notification of resignation.

Before filling in the resignation form, please contact to the degree programme's guiding staff (student advisor, tutor teacher, programme coordinator or head of degree programme).

The resignation form will be filled in OMA service.

Revocation and reinstatement of the right to study (SORA provisions)

The Universities of Applied Sciences Act includes the so-called SORA provisions, which deal with solutions related to unsuitability to study with the aim of improving safety in UAS tuition and later in working life. The purpose of the provisions is to promote patient and customer safety, the safety of minors and the safety of students and the learning and work communities.

The SORA provisions may place obstacles to being accepted as a student (Universities of Applied Sciences Act, 932/2014, section 26, referred to later as the “UAS Act”) and lead to the revocation of the right to study (UAS Act, section 33), the suspension of the right to study (UAS Act, section 38(4)) or the temporary expulsion of the student (UAS Act, section 38(2)). The means included in the SORA provisions are intended only for the most difficult cases of unsuitability, where student guidance and student services measures are no longer sufficient.

SORA guidelines for the revocation and reinstatement of the right to study at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is based on the Universities of Applied Sciences Act and the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The purpose of these guidelines is to clarify the provisions of the Act and the Degree Regulations.
