Scholarships
Students enrolled at Metropolia that are not citizens of EU or EEA countries studying in degree programmes offered in English are required to pay tuition fees. Metropolia has a scholarship scheme to support students taking part in degree studies that are subject to a fee. Students participating in commissioned education are not entitled to scholarships. This rule does not apply to students who started their studies in commissioned education before 1 January 2022. Students who are exempted from paying the tuition fee are not eligible for the scholarships.
Scholarship system for Bachelor's Degree students who began their studies on or after 1 August 2024
Those Bachelor’s degree students who begin their studies on or after 1.8.2024 may apply for a Metropolia scholarship based on completing Metropolia’s Finnish language courses (Finnish 1, Finnish 2, Finnish 3 and Finnish 4) and completing a national Finnish language level test (National Certificates of Language Proficiency, YKI(opens a new tab)) as described below.
Each student may be granted a scholarship at maximum three times during their Bachelor’s degree studies at Metropolia. The scholarship will be granted only once per academic year. During the first academic year the students are entitled to a scholarship amounting €1,000 by completing courses Finnish 1 and Finnish 2 with a minimum of grade 3 in both courses. During the second academic year the students are entitled to a scholarship amounting €2,000 by completing courses Finnish 3 and Finnish 4 with a minimum of grade 3 in both. During the third academic year the scholarship amounting €3,000 euros will be granted for students on the basis of the intermediate level of the National Certificates of Language Profiency (YKI-test(opens a new tab)) in Finnish. To be entitled for Metropolia scholarship the YKI-test must be taken and completed while enrolled as present student at Metropolia.
The first and second scholarships are granted on the basis of Finnish language courses taken at Metropolia. Other Finnish language courses do not provide eligibility for the scholarship. Therefore, do not apply for RPL (recognition of prior learning) if you intend to apply for a scholarship.
The Finnish language courses at Metropolia that provide eligibility for the scholarship:
Common course codes for all degrees (OPS 2024 and OPS 2025):
- Finnish 1 (A1.2): XX00EL05
- Finnish 2 (A1.3–A2.1): XX00EL11
- Finnish 3 (A2.1–A2.2): XX00EL30
- Finnish 4 (A2.2–B1.1): XX00EN47
Other course codes that provide eligibility for the scholarship (OPS 2024):
- Finnish 1: SX00FD54, TX00EN52
- Finnish 2: SX00FD68, TX00EN53
- Finnish 3: SX00FD78, TX00EN54
- Finnish 4: SX00FD84, TX00EN55
To be eligible to apply for the first scholarship, you must obtain a grade 3, 4 or 5 (5 being the best) in both Finnish 1 and Finnish 2. If you get a grade 0, 1 or 2 in either of the two courses, you will not be entitled to the first scholarship. The value of the first scholarship is €1,000. Equally, for the second scholarship, you must obtain a grade 3, 4 or 5 in both the Finnish 3 and Finnish 4 courses. The second scholarship is worth €2,000.
If you already speak Finnish well, do not apply for RPL. Contact the course teacher. The Finnish language teacher will roughly assess whether your skills meet the oral and written objectives set for a particular course. If your skills seem to be sufficient, the teacher will give you instructions on how to demonstrate your oral and written skills. The conditions (grade and course equivalence) and amount (in euros) of the scholarship are the same as above. Please note that you must demonstrate your skills for each course separately. Once you have demonstrated your competence or participated in the Finnish 1 and Finnish 2 courses, you can apply for the first scholarship. Once you have demonstrated your competence or participated in Finnish 3 and Finnish 4, you can apply for the second scholarship.
According to Metropolia’s degree regulations, you have the right to retake a failed oral and/or written exam twice and a passed exam once at a time specified by the teacher. Unless you can establish a justifiable cause for your absence from an examination or retake, the absence will be considered a performance failure. Raising the grades for class activity and course assignments is not possible. The teachers will explain how the course grade is determined. An approved grade for the whole course cannot be raised.
For the third scholarship, a proficiency level assessment 3 in the intermediate level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) test is required. Other language qualifications or courses of study do not provide eligibility for the scholarship. To apply for the third scholarship, you must obtain a grade 3 in each of the four subtests of the intermediate level of Finnish (text comprehension, writing, listening comprehension and speaking). The value of the third scholarship is €3,000.
YKI system
The YKI (National Certificates of Language Proficiency)(opens a new tab) test evaluates real-life Finnish skills. It is used for employment, education, and citizenship. The YKI certificates are official, nationally recognised, language certificates, used e.g. in job search, higher education admissions and citizenship applications. The YKI certificates are based on your language skills. The tests measure your Finnish skills in speaking, writing, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension.
The YKI system(opens a new tab)(opens a new tab) consists of three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced level. Each level is further divided into two sub-levels.
YKI Intermediate Level Proficiency
The YKI intermediate level test can be passed with the YKI skills levels 3 and 4. The minimum requirement for the scholarship is the YKI skills level 3 (equals to B1 level on the CEFR scale(opens a new tab)) in all the categories: speaking, writing, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. The intermediate level YKI 4 equals to CERF scale B2.

The third Metropolia scholarship is applied for on the basis of the intermediate level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) test. The description of the intermediate level:
YKI proficiency level 3 (CEFR scale B1): Understands longer stretches of speech and the central idea from many TV and radio programmes if the topic area is relatively familiar and the speech tempo is normal. Understands ordinary everyday texts but more demanding texts with unfamiliar subject matter may cause difficulties. Can cope in the most common speech situations and is able to write simple, coherent text on everyday topics, even though grammatical and lexical inaccuracies may occasionally hinder comprehension.
YKI proficiency level 4 (CEFR scale B2): Understands normal tempo speech on general topics, but some details may not be understood. Fast spoken language and dialects, however, cause difficulties. Has no difficulty understanding texts dealing with general topics, although some nuances conveyed in the text may not be clear. Copes fairly well in a variety of both official and unofficial speech situations. Is able to write both private and semi-official texts and to express thoughts as a coherent whole.
