Work placement in the field of business
The goals of the job placement are:
• To learn the routines and practices of business life
• To apply the theories you have learned at school to real-life situations
• To get your foot in the door of a company and to start building your own professional network
You are expected to find the placement opportunities by yourself. Your placement can be unpaid or paid
(=regular work contract).
The content of your placement needs to be related to business administration in a company,
government, or an NGO: a job opportunity you would not be able to get without being a Bachelor-level
business administration student at a university
You can do your 30 ECTS job placement in several different ways:
• All 30 ECTSs in one part: 20 weeks of full-time employment (37,5-40 hours/week)
• Two 15 ECTS periods: 10 + 10 weeks of full-time employment (37,5-40 hours/week)
• You might also be able to utilize your current or previous summer or part-time work experience
towards your placement credits: if the experience is from a time before you started your studies
at Metropolia the credits will be handled via the Electronic Recognition of Prior Learning system
• You can also complete your placement working part-time:
o 400 hours = 10 working weeks = 15 ECTS
o 800 hours = 20 working weeks = 30 ECTS
• You can do your job placement also in your own established (tax registration number, website,
official address, clients/billing…) and operational company as an entrepreneur, but you cannot
use your placement to set up a new company: contact your placement supervisor to discuss the
details
• You won’t receive a grade on your placement: just 15 or 30 ECTSs once the placement process
has been completed
The placement would ideally have an international orientation:
• It can mean for example that the company language is English, the staff of the company is multi-
national, the organization has customers or suppliers abroad, etc.
• You can also complete your placement abroad: Check OMA for additional guidelines, hints, and
grant information. To start the process for a placement abroad, please fill in the work placement
contract and grant application before your placement starts.
You’ll always need an official signed job placement agreement with the company/organization in
question to be insured during your placement period:
• Paid job placement: work contract = you are covered by the company insurance
• Unpaid job placement: Metropolia placement contract = you are covered by Metropolia’s
insurance: ask for the contract template from your placement supervisor after you have added all
the information about your placement into the portal
• For a placement abroad you will need two separate contracts: a contract with your employer/from
the placement portal as well as the Mobility Online contract drafted together with the International Coordinator
