Work placement

Work placement is an essential part of studies in a university of applied sciences. The degree comprehends 30-120 credits of work placement depending on the degree programme. The aim of the work placement is to support the student's professional development towards expertise. More detailed objectives, requirements, execution and assessment have been determined in each degree programme. The work placement period which is included in the degree at Metropolia can be performed in part or in total abroad.

The work placement is a goal-directed process, during which the student learns professional skills and practices set by working life. The target of the work placement is to familiarise the students with the practical tasks in their study fields and learn how to combine theory and practice. In addition, the students gain experience of the prerequisites of professional life to support their professional development and career choices, and to build up their professional identities. Throughout the work placement students create new connections which will open opportunities for further co-operation. These include the opportunity to complete the final thesis or to obtain a summer job.

The student carries out the work placement under guidance and supervision of the university of applied sciences and the work place according to the training objectives of each degree programme. The university of applied sciences assists and guides the student to complete the training process succesfully. The Field of Study of Health care and Social Services have their own specific practices on how to carry out the work placement (clinical practice) and how to find a place to complete it.

However, it is usually the student's responsibility to search and acquire the work placement. Taking an active role, such as making a plan for a job search and getting in touch with the employers leads often to a good result.
