During Your Studies
Teachers and advisors of your degree program will communicate important study-related matters via Metropolia email. Be sure to check your Metropolia emails regularly to stay informed about essential updates and schedules.
General study-related guidelines and information can be found in the Student Knowledge Base and through the degree program’s own advisory communication channels.
Information related to completing course units is available in the OMA service's workspace or Moodle workspaces.
By participating in group guidance, you will gain information about study practices, schedules, courses, services, the learning environment, as well as digital tools and information systems.
The content and implementation of group guidance vary by degree program.
For example, at the beginning of your studies, orientation days may be organized, along with introductory courses or related lessons focusing on your field and academic studies. Additionally, throughout your studies, information sessions may be held on topics such as work placement, international opportunities, or major option selection.
Should you need guidance for your personal study plan (PSP), you can contact your degree program’s designated PSP counsellor.
- At the beginning of your studies, a dedicated PSP counsellor is assigned to you for the duration of your studies.
- The PSP counsellor helps you with your personal study plan and discusses any necessary changes with you.
- Different members of staff may serve as PSP counsellor, such as a study counselor, teacher tutor, or degree coordinator, and the assigned PSP counsellor may change, for example, after the first year of studies.
If you need additional personalized study guidance, you can reach out to another designated PSP counsellor within your degree program.
PSP counsellor Contact Information
Your degree program provides contact details for various PSP counsellors and their roles at the beginning of your studies. Before that, you can find the contact information on the program’s introduction page, accessible through Metropolia’s study offering search
If you need support related to well-being—such as coping, anxiety, motivation, or study ability—you can find information on the Student Well-being Support page.
Metropolia’s study psychologists, student counselors, study coaches, and chaplains offer individual guidance on well-being and endurance-related matters. However, Metropolia’s student well-being staff do not provide guidance on study plans. For matters related to study plans, contact your degree program’s PSP counsellor
The Healthcare web page provides information about student health services, including general practitioner and dental services.
If you need support in your studies due to a learning difficulty, sensory impairment, or another reason, you can apply for individualized teaching arrangements.

Are you a Dedicated Athlete Applying to Or Studying at Metropolia?
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is a founding member of the Helsinki Metropolitan Sports Academy Urhea demonstrating its commitment to supporting student-athletes in successfully managing their sports and academic careers.
Our student-athletes are affiliated with the Helsinki Metropolitan Sports Academy Urhea, another Olympic Committee-approved sports academy, or a sports club.
A student-athlete may be a competitive or elite athlete or a professional athlete:
- Competitive or elite athletes (e.g., high jump, sprinting, powerlifting) are always part of an Olympic Committee-approved sports academy.
- Professional athletes (e.g., football, ice hockey) earn a living through sports, either via salary or sponsorships, and cannot pursue full-time employment alongside their sport. While professional athletes may be part of an Olympic Committee-approved sports academy, it is not mandatory.
Applicants: Explore Study Opportunities for Athletes
You can apply for degree studies either through the joint application or via the Open UAS Athlete Pathway designed specifically for athletes
Athlete pathway studies are an excellent option if you:
- Are uncertain about your future field of study or not yet ready to commit to degree studies due to sports commitments.
- Prefer an alternative route to becoming a degree student rather than the general admission process.
If you are interested in Athlete Pathway Studies, schedule a meeting with a study counselor before applying. During the counseling session, your eligibility for pathway studies will be assessed, and you will receive guidance on the studies and student life in general. Contact details for study counselors are available on the degree program’s pathway studies page
The Open UAS also offers general pathway studies, which are available to all applicants regardless of their background. Pathway Studies – An Alternative Route to Degree Studies at Metropolia
Support for Student-Athletes
Every student-athlete’s situation is unique. If you require additional support, you can discuss your needs with your degree program’s PSP counsellor, such as a study counselor or tutor teacher. Support may include arrangements for work placement schedules, absences due to training camps, or other practical concerns.
Additionally, students and degree program advisors can consult Metropolia’s Urhea contact person, Paula Lindqvist, if needed.
Metropolia provides various academic arrangements to support the dual-career model. Arrangements may differ between degree programs, and the final decisions are made by course instructors. Examples of study arrangements include: Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and accreditation of competencies (AHOT), additional exam attempts, extended deadlines for assignments and extended time for completing courses and work placements.
Competitive Sports Activities for an Elite Athlete, 5 ECTS course
A competitive or elite athlete, or a professional athlete, can complete the course Competitive Sports Activities for an Elite Athlete(5 ECTS, XX00FK44) as part of elective studies. The student does not enroll in the course themselves but instead contacts the study counsellor:
- Business, culture, and media students: Mari Rupponen, study counsellor
- Social and health care, as well as engineering students: Paula Lindqvist, study counsellor
