Welcome to the August edition of the Monthly Newsletter for International Students at Metropolia!

We hope you’ve had a restful summer and are ready for a new academic year. August in Finland marks both the slow fading of summer and the exciting start of the study year: new courses, new routines, and for many of you, a new chapter in Finland.

The beginning of the academic year can feel busy: orientation, timetables, settling housing arrangements, and getting used to studying again after the summer break. Remember that it’s completely normal if it takes some time to find your rhythm. Try to combine study routines with small wellbeing habits – regular sleep, meals, movement, and moments to relax – right from the start of the semester.

This is also the perfect time to explore hobby and leisure opportunities in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. There are many ways to balance your studies with activities you enjoy:

  • Sports and exercise: MeMove Sports and Wellness Services, city sports services, outdoor gyms, running routes, and swimming halls
  • Culture and arts: museums, cinemas, concerts, libraries, festivals, and free events throughout the region.
  • Clubs and communities: student associations, gaming groups, volunteering, and various hobby clubs where you can meet both international and local students.

Finding even one regular hobby can help you build a social network, improve your wellbeing, and feel more at home in Finland. Attending hobbies and events in Finnish can also be a fun way to practice your language skills.

In this edition, you will find information, tips, and events to support your studies, everyday life, and free time at the start of the new academic year. Take a moment to explore the newsletter and make this autumn a good and balanced beginning to your year at Metropolia. Read more tips we’ve put together in the Student Guide under “Student Life.”
