Grants, scholarships and stipends
The student submits the application for a grant following the instructions of the donor. The student is individually responsible to fulfill the requirements in applying and using the grant as well as in declaring the grant to the Tax Administration and Kela. Metropolia assists the student e.g. in providing teachers' recommendations for the applications.
A grant or scholarship can be tax-free only when it is intended for study, scientific research or activity in art. More in vero.fi- pages. Grants can affect the student allowance and they must be declared to Kela. More in kela.fi -pages.
Grants in Metropolia
Metropolia's Degree Programmes and their sponsors may have other grants or stipends which are informed about or announced for application through the Degree Programme.
Scholarships are also available for international exchange studies and work placement abroad. There are also scholarships for students from outside the EU and EEA who pay tuition fees.
Metropolia Foundation
Metropolia Foundation is a private foundation for the benefit of learning and research in Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The Foundation bestows grants and scholarships to students in Metropolia especially for the purpose of research in projects and final theses and in some cases for study trips.
Students in Metropolia UAS can apply for grants of Metropolia Foundation e.g. for thesis research. Metropolia Foundation also gives out stipends or grants for graduates in acknowledgment of excellent studies. These stipends cannot be applied for as they are dispensed on the basis of teachers' recommendations.
The grants are based mainly by donations from companies and private parties. Metropolia Foundation does not pay salaries or fees.
Final thesis and research project scholarships
Metropolia's students engage in research, development and innovation (RDI) work especially in their final thesis and project studies. Any company corporation or private party can financially support this research by a donation to the Metropolia Foundation. Typically 80% of the donation is directed to the intended research field or a student as a scholarship. The rest the Foundation uses to student stipends given as acknowledgements for successful studies or study trips.
Application of a research or final thesis scholarship proceeds as follows:
- An understanding between degree programme and company about any important research area or target
- Financial support for the research area or commitment by the company to make a donation to the Metropolia Foundation
- Assessment or recommendation letter by the teacher guiding the thesis or involved in the research enclosed with the application
- The applicant fills in the application form (word) and returns it with teachers recommendation letter to the e-mail address tukisaatio [at] metropolia.fi (tukisaatio[at]metropolia[dot]fi).
Stipends of acknowledgement
Metropolia Foundation dispenses every year about tens of stipends of 400 euro as an acknowledgement of successful studies. These stipends are based on teachers' recommendations and cannot be applied for.
The Board of Metropolia Foundation decides independently on all grants in its meetings (held nine times a year on the average). The admitted scholarships or stipends are paid through online bank services (IBAN, BIC needed) at the applicant’s bank account.
Finnish Tax Administration requires all grants over 1000 euro to be reported in individual tax declarations even when they are tax-free. Metropolia Foundation reports all its grants ≥ 1000 euro to Tax Administration in Finland.
As the grants and stipends of Metropolia Foundation are free of tax, the student is not obliged to inform Kela about receiving one.
