Discretionary extension
When a student's study entitlement period (the normative study time + 1 extra academic year) is about to expire, the student may apply for a discretionary extension to complete his/her studies at Metropolia. The extension period must be applied for while the right to study is valid. Any discretionary extension period is always granted or denied at Metropolia's discretion and calls for well-founded reasons. Metropolia may, on application, grant a student an additional period of a maximum of one academic year for completing his or her studies if he or she presents a goal-oriented and feasible plan for completing the studies.
In the plan, the student must detail the studies to be completed and the timetable for completing the degree. The application must also include a statement on why the studies are prolonged. The student may be asked for additional information to support the decision on the discretionary extension period. The student's life situation is also taken into consideration when granting an extension period. An extension will not be granted if the required degree studies have already been completed.
A student who has been granted a discretionary extension cannot register as non-attending. An exception to this rule is made if the student takes a leave for compulsory military or civil service or a maternity, paternity, parental or adoption leave, or if the student is unable to complete studies due to a personal illness or injury. The right to study must be valid on the graduation date. The right to study must be valid on the graduation date.
Those who fail to graduate within the extension time, but still wish to complete their degree, must re-apply to the degree programme according to the normal application procedures. A student who has been granted an extension will, to the extent possible, be credited the previous studies in the application.
