Sports

The campuses offer a variety of equipment and facilities for both exercise break and active sports.

METKA encourages students to exercise not only through Zone Sports Services, but also in other ways! METKA has had two sports projects, the results of which can still be enjoyed on campuses. In addition, METKA is a member of the Finnish Student Sports Federation and trains sports tutors as part of its other tutoring activities. The equipment in the corridors is available to everyone without reservation. Reservations for other sports facilities can be made through Zone.

Zone Sports Services

You can access Zone, joint sports services of universities of applied sciences, by becoming a member of METKA. Group exercise classes, gyms, badminton shifts, sports hall reservations, and the Yogobe video library offer something for everyone and, above all, a diverse range of wellness opportunities. Sports facilities are available at four locations:

  • Myllypuro (Metropolia)
  • Myyrmäki (Metropolia)
  • Pasila (Haaga-Helia)

Relaxation facilities and sports equipment on campuses

Sports equipment is also available on all four campuses. You can borrow sports equipment from the library on each campus with your library card. The selection includes e.g. Mölkky and nordic walking sticks – making it very easy to exercise on your own!

Student Sports and wellbeing event MetroSport

Student Union METKA is once again organizing Finland's largest student sports and wellbeing event, MetroSport, at the Töölö Sports Hall on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the event is to promote physical activity and well-being among students, introduce students and staff to sports opportunities in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and offer students an alcohol-free alternative among student events.

MetroSport brings students and staff together to enjoy a wide range of sports and wellbeing activities. At the 25th edition of the event, visitors can try out numerous sports at the Töölö Sports Hall. There will also be participants related to mental well-being. The event is free of charge, and around 5,000 visitors are expected at the sports hall. MetroSport has been organized by students since 2001, first under the name StadiaSport and later as MetroSport.

Sports teams and Competitive Sports

You can build a team and take part in the Finnish Student Championships (FSC). The Finnish Student Championships (FSC) consist of national championship tournaments for Finnish higher education students. The FSC brings together thousands of students from Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences every year. The idea behind the FSC is to offer an enjoyable sporting format for students regardless of their skill level. The whole concept is based on the joy of sports and bringing people together to have fun!

If travelling, new countries and experiences make you tick, why not take part in the international SELL Games sports contest for students! SELL Games is a yearly sports contest for students arranged by Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. SELL Games contest is an excellent opportunity to represent Finland and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and also to meet students from different countries. You don’t need to be a professional athlete to be able to join the relaxed atmosphere together with other students!

Currently there is one official Metropolia-based sports team: METKA HC. The team plays in FCAA (College Hockey League in Finland). It is also possible to form a new team in another sport. Ask METKA for more information!
