Improving Recycling on Campuses - Provide your insight

Metropolia is currently enhancing recycling at the Myyrmäki and Karamalmi campuses through a waste bin renewal project. The project utilizes last year’s development work at the Arabia campus and feedback collected from it. The project will be facilitated by service designer Miina Sirviö and environmental specialist Anna Muukkonen being in lead.

To improve the recycling rate, waste bins will be updated and reorganized. The new bins will feature labels based on the Nordic recycling pictogram system. Recycling points will be centralized, and individual mixed waste bins will be removed (except in areas where waste is specifically generated, such as workshop spaces). This approach also aims to ease the workload of cleaning staff.

Why Is This Important?

The EU Waste Framework Directive sets a goal to recycle 60% of municipal waste by 2030. By 2035, the target rises to 65%, with a maximum of only 10% of waste allowed to end up in landfills. In 2024, Metropolia’s recycling rate was just 51%. Now is the time to reduce mixed waste and to aim to achieve global sustainability goals.

Importance of hearing the community

We need everyone’s participation to make recycling work—so it needs to be as convenient as possible. That’s why we want to hear directly from those who use the campus in their daily lives.
