Instructions for Metropolia students
Student of Metropolia! Make the most of your studies by also exploring courses offered by other higher education institutions. Cross-institutional studies allow you to take courses across institutional boundaries. Based on your right to study, you may select courses from other institutions that support your personal study plan.
Cross-institutional studies are intended primarily for degree students, but institutions may also agree on opportunities for other students to participate. For example, if you are completing bachelor’s or master’s path studies through Metropolia’s Open University of Applied Sciences, you may also participate in cross-institutional studies.
On this page, you can find more information about the guidelines for cross-institutional studies. Check the course offering available to you in OMA or in the Tuudo Study Search!
Quick guide to cross-institutional studies - follow these steps:
- Explore the study offerings. Search for cross-institutional studies in OMA via ePSP or in Tuudo’s Study Search.
- Ensure with your degree programme that the courses you plan to take fit and support your personal study plan.
- Check that your study right is valid and that you are registered as attending for the entire duration of the planned studies.
- Register for the course at the other higher education institution.
- Participate in the course according to the instructions.
- Check your completed credits after finishing the course. Once the teacher at the host institution has assessed your studies, the assessment will automatically be transferred to your Metropolia study records.
More Information About Registration and Studying at Other Higher Education Institutions
There are two ways to search for cross-institutional studies in ePSP:
- On the Enrollments tab: Select the Search for courses button and filter the cross-study selection. Here you can search for implementations with ongoing enrollment period.
- On the Selecting Studies tab: Click the magnifying-glass icon and filter the cross-study selection. Here you can search for implementations regardless of whether the enrollment period is ongoing or upcoming later.
By searching for courses in PSP, you can see course offerings at the same level as the degree or path studies you are completing.
Via Study Search:
- In a browser at https://opintohaku.metropolia.fi/, or
- In the Tuudo mobile application.
There is no login in the browser version. There, you can search for all cross-institutional offerings that Metropolia has agreed on with other institutions. In Tuudo, you will see the courses specifically opened for you.
Choose only studies suitable for your degree. You can use cross-institutional studies as part of the elective studies in your PSP. Higher education institutions may also agree on curriculum-level cooperation, where the partner institutions follow the same curriculum either partially or fully. In such cases, studies completed at other institutions may be included in the compulsory studies of your PSP. Your degree programme will provide separate information about these types of studies.
Read more about planning your studies in Plan Your Studies section in Student’s Guide.
If you are completing path studies through Metropolia’s Open UAS, you can make use of cross-institutional study opportunities, for example by completing courses in advance that will later count towards the degree you intend to pursue. These courses are usually beyond the scope of your path studies. Your PSP advisor will help you to plan studies.
You can register for cross-institutional studies via your PSP or through Tuudo’s Study Search, similarly to Metropolia’s own courses. Note, that cross-institutional studies follow the enrollment periods of each institution, meaning the enrollment period for a course at another institution may differ from Metropolia’s. When registering, you confirm that your information will be transferred to the institution organising the course.
Familiarise yourself with the data protection guidelines of the organizing institution.
Track the status of your registration in your PSP. Approved registrations will be visible in your PSP (under Notices on the Inspection tab, in the PSP structure, and on the Enrollments tab). Once your registration is approved, you will be granted a study right for the courses at the host institution. The study right is granted for one academic year at a time. Note, that if your study right at Metropolia ends earlier, your study right at the host institution will also end.
The instructions and rules of the host institution apply to the studies. If you have questions about the course, contact the course teacher.
Cancelling the Registration
If you wish to cancel your registration for a course at another institution, you can do so before the end of the enrollment period on the Enrollments tab of your PSP. You may also cancel an unapproved registration after the registration period has ended.
If you cancel your registration after it has been approved, notify the institution by email. Your notice must include your name and the studies you wish to cancel. In this case, your study right at the host institution remains valid.
Note that you may complete studies only as an attending student. If you register as absent after being accepted into a course, you must inform the host institution immediately. This will allow a wait-listed student to be accepted if needed.
Assessments of study attainments are given according to the guidelines of the host institution. Once the teacher has assessed the implementation, the attainment will automatically appear in OMA, and you will see it in your Metropolia study records and in your PSP. If the studies you complete include partial assessments, you can view them on your study right at the host institution or in the My Studyinfo service.
It is your responsibility to check that the assessment has been transferred correctly to Metropolia. You do not need to apply for identification and recognition of prior learning (RPL).
You can find more instructions for cross-institutional students on the websites of the host institution. Be sure to check those as well.
