What do student assistant coaches do?

During Metropolia Minno® 2 implementations, you will have the opportunity to:

  • assist the responsible teacher in organising the course

Why should you apply?

As a student assistant coach, you will network with students from other degree programmes at Metropolia and contribute to the development of the renewed Metropolia Minno® curriculum-based courses. You will bring an authentic student perspective into the implementation of Metropolia Minno® courses, providing meaningful peer support for team-based learning.

  • develop your interaction, facilitation, and coaching skills
  • become part of an enthusiastic community of student assistant coaches
  • meet students and coaches from different campuses and fields of study

What kind of attitude do we value?

At Metropolia, our work is based on strong values that highlight equality and diversity. We welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds – you can be exactly who you are.

You do not need to be an experienced coach. What matters most is genuine presence and the ability to encounter students as individuals.

Previous experience in similar roles is not required, as all new student assistant coaches will be trained for the role. Metropolia Minno® provides training that equips you to grow into the coaching role. We value a positive and learning-oriented attitude, courage, presence, ability to take initiative, and the ability to interact with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams in Finnish and/or English.

Compensation

Student assistant coaches are paid €12/hour for working hours. Working hours will be agreed separately. The estimated amount of work is around 10–30 hours per student per project.

why you want to work as a student assistant coach in the Metropolia Minno® environment

what kind of skills, experience, or attitude you would bring to the role (e.g. teamwork, facilitation, international experience, project work)

  • your language skills (Finnish / English / other)

  • how far along are you in your studies

We value authenticity, motivation, and a willingness to learn – you do not need to be a finished or experienced coach.

Experiences from previous student assistant coaches

Being a student coach in the MINNO project has truly an amazing experience! I have drawn from my past experience as a person who was coached during the IHME competition which has showed me how powerful it is to combine practical advice with genuine empathy. By sharing real experiences and truly listening to students, I was able to support their growth and mine too.

One of the greatest lessons I learned is that coaching is a two-way street. Staying open-minded and co-creating solutions with students empowers them but also sharpens your own skills in ways you don’t expect. I have seen first hand that every coaching experience adds a new tool to your toolkit and makes you a stronger, more confident coach.

If you are considering becoming a student coach, I encourage you to dive in with an open heart. You will be amazed at how much you grow alongside the students you support! I have also made wonderful friends.

Opiskelija-apuvalmentajana oleminen on kyllä ihan huikeaa hommaa! Apuvalmentamisen myötä olen oppinut ajattelemaan omaa osaamistani ihan uudesta kulmasta.

Serving as a student assistant coach showed me that the greatest benefit of higher education today is the network you build. Knowledge is everywhere, but the chance to meet inspiring people—potential future colleagues or business partners—is what makes studying truly valuable.

Through the Minno project, I didn’t just gain experience, I formed lasting connections. I’m still collaborating with one of the mentors I met during the program, and together we’re developing new projects.

I would definitely recommend this role to anyone who wants to expand their network, strengthen their teamwork skills, and grow personally. It’s a great opportunity to be part of something meaningful and make a real difference.
