The application period for the discretionary extension has begun

When a student’s normative + 1 year study right time has passed, their study right at the university of applied sciences ends.

Are you one of those students? In case you are on your normative+1 time right now and your study right is ending on 31.12.2025, you should apply for a discretionary extension. If you are graduating this autumn by December at the latest, you don’t have to read any further.

You should apply for the discretionary extension between 15.10. - 15.11.2025

The application must be submitted by 15.11.2025 at the latest in order to receive the decision via email by 15.12.2025. If you submit the application later than 15.11., you may receive the decision after the Christmas -- and you would be already marked as resigned by then. Should you not graduate in the autumn of 2025 or if you have not applied for the discretionary extension, your study right will be considered to have ended and you will be marked as resigned on 31.12.2025. If you graduate by December at the latest, you do not need to apply for the discretionary extension.

You must discuss the contents of your studies and your study plan with your ePSP counsellor before applying for the discretionary extension.

Please note:

  • Metropolia may, on application, grant a student an additional period of a maximum of one aca-
demic year for completing his or her studies if he or she presents a goal-oriented and feasible plan for completing the studies.
  • The application must include a statement on why the studies have been prolonged.
  • Any discretionary extension period is always granted or denied at Metropolia’s discretion and calls for well-founded reasons. Please note that work and delays caused by work are not acceptable reasons for why the studies have been prolonged.

You can apply for the discretionary extension and pay for the handling fee of 50€ in AINI service https://aini.eduplan.fi/. Log in to the service using HAKA login (username and password is the same as your Metropolia username and password). Fill in the application and send it and then pay the handling fee.
